History of the Holt Rock Hoedown
The Holt Rock Hoedown began in 2001 as a one-off idea that quickly evolved into a much-loved bi-annual event.
The concept was first discussed by members of the Westfield Country Music Club, a Perth based group that regularly held monthly country music barbecues at the Haulex Yard in Maddington. One of the club's active members, Gary Strother, who had became involved through regular attendance, eventually joining the committee and later serving as Vice President and President, suggested a Country Music event held on how family farm in Holt Rock, a small locality located just four hours from Perth.
On 17 October 2001, the inaugural Holt Rock Hoedown was held at the Strother family’s shearing shed. A makeshift stage was constructed, linseed was spread on the floor, and the atmosphere was set. The headline act that year was the duo Vince and Di Bacon, who became regular performers and later expanded into a four-piece band. As the popularity of the Hoedown grew, the venue needed to expand—initially by extending the shearing shed with a new stage area.
By 2013, the event had outgrown the original shearing shed which prompted a move to the nearby larger machinery shed, which remains the Hoedown’s current venue. A busy bee effort by volunteers levelled the ground and installed a dance floor.
Over the years, several infrastructure upgrades have improved the experience for guests. Extra accommodation dongas were donated by Rod and Sue Turpin. Fridges and toilets were sourced through the efforts of committee members Bindi, Kaelen, Terry and Pauline. Sheet metal donated by Paddy replaced the original tarpaulins along the side of the shed, improving weather protection and durability.
The Friday Night Jam Session, now a highlight of the weekend, originated in 2013 around Vince and Di Bacon’s caravan. Di would set up her music gear and invite others to bring food, join in, and enjoy an informal night of music. As the gathering grew in popularity, it was moved into the main shed and has since become an integral part of the weekend.
As of 2024 the decision was made to reduce the Hoedown from a bi-annual event to an annual one, with the last April show being help in April 2024, allowing the event to become bigger and better each year.
Since its inception, the Holt Rock Hoedown has donated over $94,000 to various charities and local organisations, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Varley Fire Brigade, Hyden Silver Chain, the Bulldog Trust, Angel Flight, and many more.
The ongoing success of the Holt Rock Hoedown is thanks to the dedication of its committee and volunteers.
Now celebrating over two decades of country music, community, and contribution, the Holt Rock Hoedown continues to be a much-anticipated event on the local calendar.
